On the Observed Relationships between Variability in Kuroshio-Oyashio Sea
نویسندگان
چکیده
10 Observational analyses reveal that variations in sea surface temperatures (SST) in the 11 Kuroshio-Oyashio extension (KOE) region of the North Pacific are associated with two dis12 tinct and robust patterns of atmospheric variability: 1) a pattern that peaks in amplitude 13 approximately 2 3 weeks prior to large KOE SST anomalies, and is consistent with atmo14 spheric forcing of the SST field and 2) a very different pattern that lags SST anomalies in 15 the KOE region by approximately a month. The latter pattern is dominated by low sea level 16 pressure anomalies located over warm SST anomalies, and is interpreted as the transient 17 atmospheric response to SST anomalies over the KOE region. The results contribute to a 18 growing body of evidence that suggests variations in SSTs in the midlatitude oceans are 19 capable of significantly influencing the large-scale atmospheric circulation, especially near 20 western boundary currents. 21

Investigating the Role of Ocean–Atmosphere Coupling in the North Pacific Ocean
Air–sea interaction over the North Pacific is diagnosed using a simple, local coupled autoregressive model constructed from observed 7-day running-mean sea surface temperature (SST) and 2-m air temperature TA anomalies during the extended winter from the 18 3 18 objectively analyzed air–sea fluxes (OAFlux) dataset. Though the model is constructed from 1-week lag statistics, it successfully repr...
متن کاملThe Forcing of the Pacific Decadal Oscillation*
The Pacific decadal oscillation (PDO), defined as the leading empirical orthogonal function of North Pacific sea surface temperature anomalies, is a widely used index for decadal variability. It is shown that the PDO can be recovered from a reconstruction of North Pacific sea surface temperature anomalies based on a first-order autoregressive model and forcing by variability of the Aleutian low...

In this study, we consider the effects of marine environmental factors on the spatial distribution of Ommastrephes bartrami in the western North Pacific Ocean during the period in which the commercial squid fishery operates. Spatial referenced fishery data and satellite-derived advanced very high resolution radiometry (AVHRR) sea surface temperature (SST) data, Sea-viewing Wide Fieldof-view Sen...

To address various fisheries science problems around Japan, the Japan Fisheries Research and Education Agency (FRA) has developed an ocean forecast system by combining an ocean circulation model based on the Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS) with three-dimensional variational analysis schemes. This system, which is called FRA-ROMS, is a basic and essential tool for the systematic conduct of...
متن کاملNOTES AND CORRESPONDENCE North Pacific Intermediate Water Transports in the Mixed Water Region
Initial mixing between the subtropical and subpolar waters of Kuroshio and Oyashio origin occurs in the mixed water region (interfrontal zone) between the Kuroshio and Oyashio. The relatively fresh water that enters the Kuroshio Extension from the Mixed Water Region is this already mixed subtropical transition water. Subtropical transition water in the density range 26.64–27.4 su can be conside...
